Grade 9 Assessments

Grade 9 is the final year of the General Education and Training band of education. From here, learners move to the Further Education and Training band which leads to the National Senior Certificate. Grade 9  is therefore a natural point for benchmarking to occur. The IEB offers various benchmarking opportunities to schools:

  • The IEB Subject Specific Tests (English and Afrikaans Home Language, and Mathematics)

  • The International Benchmarking Tests (more information)

Grade 9 Subject Specific Tests

The Grade 9 Subject Specific Tests are available in English or Afrikaans Home Language and Mathematics.

The Subject Specific Tests measure learners’ ability in the essential knowledge and competencies deemed to be in place if Grade 9 learners are to meet the demands of the Further Education and Training Band.

These tests are usually written in the first week of November and the learners’ scripts are marked by teachers at the participating schools using the marking guidelines which are provided online after 12pm on the day of the assessment. All scripts are returned to the IEB for the standardisation process. The IEB provides feedback to participating schools about the achievement of their learners as well as about the school’s performance in relation to the full sample of participating schools.
