MAY 2024 FURTHER STUDIES EXAMINATIONS RESULTS ANNOUNCEMENT

It is always inspiring to witness learners striving for success and excelling academically. A total of 699 learners wrote the IEB May 2024 Further Studies examinations, compared to 423 learners who wrote in May 2023.

The Further Studies examinations, which are optional and voluntarily undertaken by learners, are enrichment courses which provide a valuable opportunity to enhance academic excellence before entering tertiary education. The Further Studies subjects not only strengthen the learners’ academic foundation but also bolster their university admissions prospects and academic success, both locally and internationally.

This year, 696 learners sat the Further Studies examination for the first time, while 3 took the examination for the second time to improve their previous results. Notably, among the 696, an impressive 50 were Grade 11 learners. This commendable dedication reflects a proactive approach towards academic growth even before the learners reach their final year of schooling, showcasing their commitment to testing their skills and expanding their knowledge base.

This cohort achieved outstanding results, boasting an impressive pass rate of 80.33% across the six subjects offered. Furthermore, 56 learners achieved exceptional results, scoring between 90 to 99%.

The IEB Further Studies courses are taken by learners offering the International Senior Certificate (ISC) qualification in eSwatini, Mozambique, and Namibia, as well learners offering the National Senior Certificate (NSC) in South Africa from both independent and public schools. The Further Studies courses are externally quality assured by Stellenbosch University Unit for International Credentialling (SU-UIC). The IEB has ensured the Further Studies curricula and assessment is globally competitive and offers the learners that much needed edge for their university admissions.

Additionally, the Further Studies courses underwent a comprehensive benchmarking exercise by UK Ecctis, which performs a similar service to that of the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) in evaluating foreign qualifications. The Ecctis report indicates that Further Studies can be considered comparable to the overall GCE Advanced (A) level standard.

The IEB wishes to congratulate all learners who sat the 2024 Further Studies examinations, and commends them on their commitment, resilience, and achieving such high academic excellence. As indicated by the CEO of the IEB Ms Confidence Dikgole at the meeting held to approve the release of results “We (IEB) take every step necessary to maintain credibility and reliability in the examinations". Prof Sarah Howie, Director of the SU-UIC, shared this sentiment stating “We (SU-UIC) regard this as a very successful examination sitting in this fourth offering.”

Ends.
